Earth Team

Volunteer jobs are identified through assesments of RC&D projects and activities. The Great Plains RC&D has over 90 active projects and each of these projects require volunteers to carry out the activities. Individual jobs are identified within each project and may include public relations, media contacts, program presenters, speakers at conferences, photographers, writers and educators. The very nature of RC&D projects necessatates groups of volunteers. Earth Team volunteers are insured a quality volunteer experience by recognizing their importance and contribution to the mission of NRCS and completion of RC&D projects. Volunteers are recognized at meeings of the Great Plains RC&D Council and in published newspaper articles in local towns. The recognition of volunteer efforts and a "heartflet thank you" greatly enhances the retention of volunteetrs. Careful attention is placed on the desires of the volunteer through the initial interview and in follow-up conversations to make sure their expectations are met. Great Plains RC&D Coordinator, Larry Wright, has been recognized for his belief and enthusiasm of the NRCS Earth Team and as a result shared that enthusiasm at the recent Earth Team Coordinators Workshop in Reno, Nevada.

The Earth Team is the volunteer organization of NRCS to support all programs, actions and activities of NRCS. In the Great Plains RC&D Area, 143 Earth Team volunteers contributed 5,043 hours during FY04.
